Liberals Support Sex-Selective Abortion (They Just Don’t Want to Admit It)

By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS

Last night, Jake Tapper of ABC News contacted White House Press Secretary Jay Carney for a statement on the current administration’s position regarding H.R. 3541, otherwise known as PRENDA (the Prenatal Non-Discrimination Act of 2012.)

Carney could not immediately provide a statement; however, deputy press secretary Jamie Smith responded in a later statement:

“The Administration opposes gender discrimination in all forms, but the end result of this legislation would be to subject doctors to criminal prosecution if they fail to determine the motivations behind a very personal and private decision. The government should not intrude in medical decisions or private family matters in this way.”1

What the administration fails to note- within Section 5 of the bill2:

RULE OF CONSTRUCTION- Nothing in this Act shall be construed to require that a healthcare provider has an affirmative duty to inquire as to the motivation for the abortion, absent the healthcare provider having knowledge or information that the abortion is being sought based on the sex or gender of the child.

Well, either way, the Obama administration is going to be a little ticked with the passage of this bill last night through the House Judiciary Committee by a vote of 20-133.  According to a press release issued by Arizona Congressman Trent Franks:

"The very bedrock foundational principle that gave birth to America was the conviction that all human beings are children of God and created equal in His sight. In 1847, Frederick Douglass said, 'Right is of no sex; truth is of no color, God is the Father of us all--and all are brethren.'

"I know when the subject is related in any way to abortion, the doors of reason and human compassion in our minds and hearts often close, and the humanity of the unborn can sometimes no longer be seen. But this is an issue upon which all Americans should be able to find agreement, regardless of our party affiliations or even our beliefs about abortion.

"Our innate sense of human fairness should make it abundantly clear that aborting a little baby because he or she happens to be black or because he or she has been arbitrarily deemed 'lesser' is fundamentally wrong, representing a betrayal of the precious truth that all men are created equal and are stamped with the Imago Dei on their souls.

"I am convinced this is the civil rights battle that will define our generation, and, by the grace of God, I look forward to this vital measure's consideration on the House floor and its ultimate passage."

The legislation outlaws abortions performed on the basis of the child's sex or race. It also outlaws the coercion of any woman to obtain either a sex- or race-based abortion.  A minority baby is currently five times more likely to be aborted than a white baby, and nearly half of all black babies' are aborted, with over 70 percent of abortion clinics being located in predominantly minority neighborhoods.4

Opponents, prior to the passage of the bill, were unamused by the attempt of pro-life supporters to bring PRENDA to the table.

“Somebody decided politically that it was a difficult place to put people in,” House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., told reporters Wednesday afternoon. “It’s a political effort, not a substantive effort.”5

The lunacy of the left overwhelms me.

“The Republican majority continues its War on Women in a new and creative way: by attempting to couch legislation that would destroy women’s fundamental constitutional rights as a woman’s rights law. It is cynical, but creative,” Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., said. “The preference for male children is a real, if limited, phenomenon in the United States. Some women face familial and community preference to have male children, and that pressure can increase with each subsequent birth. But this does nothing to help those women.”6

Blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng, who spoke out against forced abortions in his native China, captured international headlines this month and GOP aides said the leadership hoped to capitalize on the momentum of that awareness to ensure that sex-selection abortions are not legal in the U.S.7

“For most of us, Mr. Speaker, ‘It’s a girl’ is cause for enormous joy, happiness and celebration,” Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., said on the House floor. “But in many countries including our own, it could be a death sentence. Today the three-most dangerous words in China and India are, ‘It’s a girl.’ We can’t let that happen here.”8

As I’ve written previously9, this IS a concern here.  With the release of an undercover video by Live Action10, it is clear that organizations such as Planned Parenthood are at least prepared for women and their partners to ask about such things; we can see that the “workers of iniquity” employed there have no qualms about helping someone obtain a late-term abortion, as most ultrasounds cannot detect the sex of the baby until approximately four or five months into the pregnancy.

Psalm 106:35-40 (KJV)
But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works.
And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them.
Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils,
And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood.
Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.
Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance.

Proverbs 6:16-17 (KJV)
These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood…

Gendercide Comes to America?!

By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS

The dirty little secret of sex-selective abortion within the United States is exposed in a shocking new undercover video released today by Live Action.

Live Action is a youth led movement dedicated to building a culture of life and ending the human rights abuse of abortion. They use new media to educate the public about the humanity of the unborn and investigative journalism to expose threats against the vulnerable and defenseless.1 The video is first in a new series titled "Gendercide: Sex-Selection in America," exposing the practice of sex-selective abortion in the United States and how Planned Parenthood and the rest of the abortion industry facilitate the selective elimination of baby girls in the womb.2

In the video, taken on April 10, 2012, an undercover member of Live Action went into the Planned Parenthood in South Austin (TX) and proceeded to engage a “counselor” in a conversation regarding the best way to determine the sex of the baby she was carrying so that she may terminate if it was a girl.  They discussed how sex is usually determined by ultrasound at about five months gestation, how the brain was already developed at that point, which physicians would be least likely to object if they knew she may obtain an abortion based on the sex of the baby, and even how to scam the Medicaid system to pay for her ultrasound, even though she planned to use the knowledge for an abortion.

"The search-and-destroy targeting of baby girls through prenatal testing and abortion is a pandemic that is spreading across the globe," notes Lila Rose, founder and president of Live Action. "Research proves that sex-selective abortion has now come to America. The abortion industry, led by Planned Parenthood, is a willing participant."3

"Planned Parenthood and their ruthless abortion-first mentality is the real 'war on women'," says Rose. "Sex-selective abortion is gender discrimination with lethal consequences for little girls."4

On Wednesday, Congress will debate the Prenatal Non-Discrimination Act (PRENDA), which would ban sex-selective abortions nationally.

A Miraculous Survival in a World Gone Wrong

By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS

This world is getting crazier and crazier.

There have been several stories in the media over the last few years about pregnant women, whether innocently going about their business or being somewhere she likely shouldn’t have been, being unfortunate enough to run into someone who doesn’t quite have their head screwed on straight.  These poor women, whether being naïve in their choice of friends or wrongly trusting a stranger who seemed to have their best interests, end up at the receiving end of a brutal attack that puts them in danger of the loss of life and limb, and often the innocent inside them.  Sometimes it is by the very person who is supposed to help protect that innocent.

That’s why today’s news headline, “Pregnant Woman, Unborn Baby Survive Being Abducted, Set on Fire, Shot,”1, 2 is by turns shocking but comforting, discouraging yet hopeful.

The young mother-to-be from Warren, Michigan, after what could only be described as a “date” with her ex-boyfriend (and father of her baby,) dropped the man (if that is what you would want to continue calling him) off at his new girlfriend’s house.  Once inside the garage, she was grabbed by the throat, a gun to her head, and forced to the ground.  Her mouth, hands, and feet were duct-taped and she was blindfolded.  Thrown back into the car and driven to an alley in Detroit, she was told that ‘she knows why’ this was being done to her and asked how far along she was before being set on fire; after managing to put the fire out herself by rolling on the ground, the male assailant shot her in the back.  He took off on foot as the nine-month-pregnant woman played dead.  She got up and drove herself to her mother’s house in Detroit, where she was then taken to a hospital.

That both mother and baby are healthy and expected to survive is nothing short of a miracle.

It does, however, bring up an interesting point about how the liberal-biased media is unable to decide, like their Messiah King Obama, whether or not the unborn are babies with a right to life or a parasite that can be killed up to the moment of birth (see previous post, Obama a Hypocrite on Abortion... Oh, the Irony.)

Commenter “A.D. Roach” seems to have summed it up best:

“So glad to hear of her miraculous escape, and that she and the BABY are going to be ok! However, I thought what she has in her womb is merely a fetal non-person, not a “baby.” It is definitely disingenuous for so many in the news and entertainment media to keep rejoicing over “baby bumps” and the survival of an “unborn baby” while at the same time proclaiming women’s rights to unlimited abortions. So, was this an “unborn baby” who “survived,” or was it a non-personal pre-born fetus without any legitimate expectancy or right to life? Had the “unborn baby” died but the mother did not, would the kidnapper be guilty of murder, or would he only be guilty of performing an abortion without a license? Since apparently the objective of the kidnapping was to prevent another “inconvenient” birth was he not attempting to save the woman and society from having to raise another “unwanted child?…”3

I think that in any case, this woman should be thankful the Lord was watching out for her and her child, and that maybe she should take it not only as a sign of that, but perhaps also a warning that she should be a little more selective regarding a future husband- someone who will be more likely to live his life justified and sanctified.

Using Regret to Warn Against Unrighteousness

By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS

Gwen and Brad were college athletes, Christians, and were outwardly living their lives righteously.  What their friends and families did not realize was that they not only were sexually active, but they became pregnant and subsequently had an abortion.  Later, they married and had children, but for 15 years they never were quite able to get rid of the guilt- that is, until, Gwen heard someone speak at a women’s meeting about their abortion and the healing process.

“And I sat in the back of the room saying, I can’t believe she’s doing this, that’s so hard, but I saw what God was doing, it was obvious, He was moving, His spirit was moving in the room, and women were, were coming to healing, and, and embracing His grace and forgiveness, and a lot of times we won’t forgive ourselves, but I saw the hand of God move, because she was willing to tell.”

They decided to tell Gwen’s parents and, while shocked, they forgave them.  Now Gwen speaks at conferences and retreats to help women heal from mistakes of the past.

“…It was the deepest regret of my life.  It will always be the deepest regret of my life,” she said.  “Jesus died for every single sin… there are no sins that fall outside the scope of God’s ability to forgive.  And when we understand that, and we understand that when we confess our sin, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sin, and to cleanse us for all of the unrighteousness as the Bible says, that’s when healing begins.”

Another Inspirational Story of Life

By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS

Today I logged into my Facebook account, and in my newsfeed, I saw an article posted by Prophecy News Watch (with a link to the original story on The Christian Post) about a young mother who decided that there was just no way she would abort her baby, even though she and her husband KNEW there was something seriously wrong- they just didn’t know what.

The mother, Lacey Buchanan, posted her testimonial on YouTube and GodVine and it has already garnered almost ten million hits.

Her son, Christian, who was born on February 18, 2011, was one of only 50 people in the world with a bilateral cleft palate and lip.  He also had clefted eyes, so that he was almost completely blind.

People were cruel to Lacey, whispering behind her back, and asking what was wrong with “that baby.”  One girl even chastised her for not aborting him.  But things began to turn around when people started to recognize her and Christian, and they would tell her how he inspired them:  “What a special child doing big things for God at such an early age. What special parents, to realize God works all things for good for those who love Him. Christian's story touched my heart -- I will pray for your precious miracle. The smile on his face makes me smile :)” says Heather (not me) in a comment on Buchanan's blog.

Winning the War for Babies

By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS

A Gallup Poll published yesterday1 has renewed hope that people are indeed listening to the pro-life message and are waking up to the fact that babies in utero are, in fact, living human beings and not just a “soulless clump of cells.”  The decline in pro-choice views is seen across the major partisan groups, with an overall decline in the last year from 49 to 41%, and a jump from 45 to 50% identifying as pro-life.

Since last May, Republicans have gained four percentage points among pro-lifers, from 68% to 72%, where pro-choicers have lost 6% (28 to 22 %.)  Among Democrats, pro-life proponents increased from 27 to 34%, and pro-choicers dropped from 68 to 58% in the same period.  Also, Independents who self-identify as pro-life increased from 41 to 47%, and pro-choice supporters dropped from 51 to 41%.  Overall, Americans’ fundamental views on the morality and legality of abortion have held relatively steady, per the corresponding graph.

Personally, I think that last point made by the Gallup organization is misleading.  How can such a large percentage of Americans change their views on whether they are pro-life or pro-choice, yet have no change in their views of the morality of abortion (legality aside)?

Just over half of all respondents answered that abortion should be legal in certain circumstances, holding relatively steady for the last twelve years.  A quarter believe it should be legal in all circumstances, and 20% believe it should be illegal in all cases.

One can only speculate as to exactly why there is such a change of heart in America… could it be the distribution and viewing of media such as the “180” movie2, or the Abort73 website3?  Is it the recent congressional wrangling over federal funding for Planned Parenthood and investigation of their practices?  Is the conflict between the Roman Catholic Church and the Obama Administration4 that has captured their attention and caused them to question their own views and values?  Or perhaps the Lord has tugged at the hearts and minds of the people and convicted them:  we can only hope and pray that this is the case.  Regardless, it is encouraging to see that so many people are finally realizing that using sin to cover sin is never the answer.

Has Michael J. Fox Seen the Light of Day?

By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS                                                                                  May 23, 2012

I never purported to be an expert in the various scientific disciplines, but my interest, nonetheless, was a major motivation to get my practical nursing license a few years ago and at least get part-way through my RN degree.  At one point, I was hoping to use it as a stepping stone to eventually end up in medical research.  Alas, plans change.

Despite the change in plans, I still retain at least a nominal interest, particularly where science and God’s plan intersect.  Coupled with my occasional dabbling in the “news” that is Hollyweird, it’s no wonder I was at least a little surprised and a bit vindicated when I saw that actor Michael J. Fox, famous for “Family Ties” and the “Back to the Future” trilogy, now believes the controversial therapy may not ultimately yield a cure for his disease, he told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in an exclusive interview.2

There have been “problems along the way,” Fox said of stem cell studies, for which he has long advocated.   Instead, he said, new drug therapies are showing real promise and are “closer today” to providing a cure for Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative illness that over time causes the body to become rigid and the brain to shut down.3

“Stem cells are an avenue of research that we’ve pursued and continue to pursue but it’s part of a broad portfolio of things that we look at. There have been some issues with stem cells, some problems along the way… It’s not so much that [stem cell research has] diminished in its prospects for breakthroughs as much as it’s the other avenues of research have grown and multiplied and become as much or more promising. So, an answer may come from stem cell research but it’s more than likely to come from another area.”4

I feel for Fox.  While I have been blessed to not have been diagnosed with anything near as devastating as he was back in 1991, I do have a very large extended family, many of whom have Huntington’s disease, another terrible neurodegenerative disorder, and I have seen the effect it has on the family.

How do you, however, justify causing death to save a life?  There is no guarantee that experimenting with the death of the pre-born is going to save a life or cure all cases of a particular disease, but could it theoretically cause some kind of mutation by the combination of non-native DNA in a synthetic manner?  This could even be the case with the usage of adult stem cells (which the article fails to differentiate:) we just don’t know the long-term effects of the usage of allogeneic treatments.  But then again, we DO have the simple medical miracle of blood transfusion.  It just reminds me of experimental chimerism (like I said, I’m NOT a scientist.)  I am heartened by Fox’s recognition that stem cells are not likely to be the holy grail of disease management, and that drug therapies, experimental surgeries, and earlier diagnosis are more probable methods in someday eradicating this disease (prior to the days of Revelation 21:4, anyway.)  Now if only we could convince him that embryonic stem-cell experimentation is not an answer at all.

The Modern Day Back-Alley Abortion?

By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS

An article released last night on WND.com titled Now non-doctors plan stunning evil for babies1 has stirred up some pretty intense feelings on both sides of the abortion argument and in particular has sent shockwaves through pro-life circles.  Apparently, at University of California- San Francisco’s Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health, there is a taxpayer-funded pilot program training non-physicians to perform first-trimester vacuum aspiration surgical abortions with as little as two-to-five days of training.  Now nurse-practitioners, certified nurse-midwives, and physician assistants in the land of fruits and nuts are being trained to commit government-endorsed murder.

What may or may not be surprising to some is the fact that some states already allow mid-level providers to perform abortion procedures.  Vermont (PAs/NPs,) New York (PAs,) Montana (PAs,) Rhode Island, Connecticut, Washington state (NPs,) Montana (Women’s Health NPs,) Oregon (NPs,) New Jersey, and Illinois allow either surgical abortion or administration of the abortion pill (“medical abortion,”) by such providers.2  California has allowed any medical providers competently trained to perform non-surgical abortions since 2002 (via the Reproductive Privacy Act, SB 1301)3 but this is the first time there was a piece of legislation geared specifically toward training non-physicians to perform surgical abortions.  The legislation is SB 1338- Safe and Early Access bill, introduced by California Sen. Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego. Its sponsors included Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, and it had the backing of leaders of both houses of the Legislature.4

Now, interesting about this pilot program is that there is a $3.5 million grant from an anonymous donor in addition to taxpayer funds, and Alameda County (which includes most of the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area) Judge Evelio Grillo has, in a May 17 decision, denied a petition for a writ of mandate to disclose the names of physicians, clinicians and stakeholders who participated in the project.5

“[T]he court finds that the public interest in withholding the names of the Clinicians outweighs the public interest in disclosing those names,” the decision states. “First, there is a public interest in protecting persons who provide abortion services from harassment. … Second, the public has an interest in academic research, and that interest may be compromised if research participants cannot participate with the assurance that their privacy will be protected.”6

According to Dana Cody, executive director of Life Legal Defense Foundation, the organization that filed the petition, said, “We feel that the names are necessary because we need to know who’s doing the training. When the project’s own documents show that the injury rate is 80 percent more than when physicians perform abortions, there are some concerns there.”

“The objective is to take them to the Legislature and say, ‘Take a look at these people and who is training,’” she explained. “We suspect from what we have been able to find out that Planned Parenthood is doing the training and another clinic, Women’s Health Services.”
“There’s a specific case from the California Supreme Court that said – in the identical situation, but it was police officers – the names must be disclosed,” Cody said. “You don’t have to give out personal data, but you must disclose the names. So not only is this not following statute, but it’s not following California Supreme Court case law.” She further added, “It’s just not right. Women deserve better. They deserve better than abortion, and they certainly deserve better than abortion by people who are not trained physicians.”7
A fact sheet released by the Life Legal Defense Foundation, compiled from public records, listed the following bases for their objections: 8

·         The Project was orchestrated not by an independent academic source but by vested interest agents at UCSF’s Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health, directed by Dr. Philip Darney. The Bixby Center itself was the beneficiary of Project funds. The California Nurses Association has objected that there was no independent peer review of this Project.

·         The Project to train non-physician abortionists was primarily financed by a major ($3.5 million) donor whom UCSF refuses to identify. Why is this donor being kept anonymous? Will it be an embarrassment to the Legislature if/when the identity of the donor who effectively paid for this law is revealed?

·         As to Project expenditures, UCSF/Bixby Center has NOT provided an accounting for 2/3 of the $3.9 million collected for the Project, despite a Public Records Act request.

·         SB 1338 has now been narrowed so that only the 41 persons who participated in the Project will get the benefit of legal protection from prosecution. It is illegal for non-physicians in California to perform surgical abortion. SB 1338 elevates this one privately and anonymously funded project, HWPP #171, to the status of a state policy, determining who is and is not guilty of a crime. This is a bad way to make law.

·         Neither the Medical Board of California nor the Nursing Board had any oversight of the Project.

·         The Project reported in December 2011 an 80% increase in complications when non-physicians performed surgical abortions. No explanation was given as to why complications increased. They reported that these complications included “incomplete abortion, failed abortion, hemorrhage/excessive bleeding, hematometra, infection, cervical injury, and uterine perforation. The non-physicians had a reported 141 total complications for women while the Physicians had 78 complications.

·         The Project reported that several hundred of the patients sampled were deemed ineligible to participate in the Project by the supervising physicians, because of various conditions including medical abnormalities and incomplete surgical or medication abortions. Under SB 1338, there will be no “supervising physician” to screen out these at-risk patients.

·         According to the Project’s “Early Abortion Training Workbook” the entire training period for each non-physician abortionist was only “2-5 days of simulated and hands on training” in order to perform 20-50 first trimester surgical abortions.9

Now, I have nothing against nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and midwives personally; in fact I use an NP instead of a doctor because I have had astoundingly better care and actually got diagnoses where my old doctor said it was “all in my head.”  She will send me to a specialist when the need arises.  However, this is taking a defined standard of practice and turning it on its head.  They are taking accepted State Nurse Practice Acts and throwing them out the window, as well as the practice guidelines of physician assistants.  It is opening a Pandora’s Box, from giving training to nurses and others who have an advanced medical background to eventually allowing anyone who can wield a vacuum tip and has a mediocre knowledge of human anatomy and physiology the ability and right to terminate the life of another human being.  There is a reason only physicians can perform surgery- the YEARS of training!  Once ObamaCare goes into effect, and we see the expected increase of patients running to get medical care, will this cause our primary care providers to be so backed up that they have to pass off “routine” care (as abortion has been described) to lesser-trained health-care workers?  How long before it is registered nurses, then licensed practical/vocational nurses, then certified nurse aides, then the medical office assistant?  Each group is gradually being trained to perform higher level and more complicated duties already: who is to say this won’t eventually become drive-thru type service?  They are risking the health and safety of women in an effort to make this (unfortunately) accepted form of genocide more easily accessible.

Obama a Hypocrite on Abortion... Oh, the Irony

By Heather Mathews

In a story dated May 8, 2012 in the Washington Times, it is revealed that the White House, under Obama, REQUIRES pregnant visitors to count their unborn child as a person for tours of Der Führer’s palace.

How’s THAT for Obama talking out both sides of his mouth?

In an email sent by Ellie Schafer, director of the White House’s visitors office, to a congressional staffer, she instructs the staffer to collect information on all visitors, even those NOT YET BORN.  She requires that staffers collect:

“LAST NAME: The family’s last name.
FIRST NAME: ‘Baby’ as a first name.
MIDDLE NAME: NMN as in No Middle Name.
DOB: Use the date you are submitting the request to us as their birthday.
GENDER: If the parents know put the gender down if not, you can enter either M or F as we’ll ask you to update it at the time of birth.
SOCIAL: As they will not have a SSN and are under 18, you will not need to enter this field. Again if the spreadsheet asked for a social enter 9 zero’s (not the word nine zeros but 000000000 and yes it happens!)
CITIZEN/CITY/STATE: The citizen, city and state should be entered the same as the parents.”

According to Secret Service spokesman Max Milien (yes, that is the name he gave in the story,) all visitors are required to provide identification “regardless of age.”  (Will they require photo I.D. of a 4th grader, or will a birth certificate suffice?  Then again, who’s to say it wouldn’t be a forgery… eh, they’ll let him in anyway- that’s not a major concern for them.)  Supposedly this is meant to serve as a placeholder in case the baby is born between the time the reservation is made and the actual tour- or perhaps even on the tour.

Douglas Johnson, legislative director of the National Right to Life Committee, had this to say:

“It is ironic that President Obama’s staff recognizes the existence of unborn babies for purposes of providing security within the White House — yet, there is no indication that President Obama has any problem with the fact that throughout the District of Columbia, abortion is now legal for any reason up to the moment of birth,” and that the email “provides no guidance on what the staff should do if an unborn baby is first registered for security purposes, but then aborted.” [I can only assume he is also referring to a spontaneous abortion a.k.a miscarriage.]

Mr. Johnson also noted that a House Judiciary subcommittee would hold a hearing on May 17 regarding legislation that would prohibit abortion in the sixth month and later in the District.  [Obviously that has now passed- the bill is The District of Columbia Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 3803) and it still not up for vote.  More info on this bill at http://www.nrlc.org/abortion/Fetal_Pain/Congressionalupdate051812.html]

So, just to make it clear: Obama is pro-life (i.e. he believes an unborn child at any gestational age is a person) when it helps to meet his quota of supporters, but pro-choice (or rather, death-indifferent,) when it comes to an individual’s personal responsibility: financially, socially, and morally.  Yep, I think we can see where his priorities lie.

Happy Mother’s Day... By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS

Happy Mother’s Day to all you mother’s and grandmother’s out there!  Surely motherhood is one of God’s greatest gifts to us.  Mankind was told from the very beginning to “be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28,) and Eve was the “mother of all living” (Genesis 3:20.)  Proverbs declares “My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother…  But perhaps the greatest verses relating to motherhood and womanhood are those of (what some would call overused,) the Proverbs 31 woman:
“…Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.  She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.  She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.”
Our mothers are blessed creatures: feeding us, clothing us, protecting us from the evils of the world, yet still teaching us how to defend ourselves; and preparing us for adulthood, to be productive members of society, and to fear and serve the Lord.  She is nurturer, doctor, nurse, teacher, cab driver, cook, housekeeper, homework helper, clothing washer, and cheerleader. Sometimes she has the help of a loving husband and father to her children; sometimes, she has to be the sole bread-winner and disciplinarian.  She does it all not because she has to, but because she wants to: she asks for nothing in return, and only wants to see you achieve your potential and become a happy, responsible human being.

No one can comfort us quite like our mother: when we were floating gently in her womb, we knew we were protected and loved.  When she rocked us as infants and toddlers, we remembered that love.  And when she picked us up from across town at 3 a.m. (when we were supposed to be elsewhere,) we knew she would continue to protect us, regardless of the disappointment she expressed or the punishment she doled out.  We may not realize it while we’re young, but when we are older, we discover something else: she is our best friend.

So we raise a glass of our favorite (non-alcoholic) beverage, to you, Moms, and we are thankful that you chose to be our mothers: that you chose LIFE.

“…I will bless her, and she shall be a mother…”  Genesis 17:16

…And Bless the Fathers, Too

By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS

A lot of us think of pro-life as being primarily a women’s issue, and certainly it is apt to be, as it is particularly draining on a woman’s body and emotions to be carrying that precious cargo inside.  To make the decision to keep a baby when the parents are financially unstable, ill or disabled, or when the father is uninterested or unable to commit to his responsibilities to that child, is likely one of the most difficult decisions that a woman will make.  Many women, even those who have always thought of themselves as pro-life, will find themselves in a spiritual battle and feeling as though they have no one (outside of the life growing within!)  One of the principal factors in the decision to obtain an abortion is the fear of being a single parent (51% in the U.S.)1 For those (often young) women opting to get an abortion, their partners frequently break off the relationship because of the stress and/or guilt following the procedure.  Yet, for every man not willing to stick around to support their partner and child, there are men that challenge the status quo and impress us with their (sometimes sudden) maturity, insightfulness, and humility, and sometimes even remorse at the lost opportunity of fatherhood:

I was 18 years old, when my high school sweetheart told me that she was pregnant. Her mother was furious, even though she did not know her daughter was pregnant. She just thought the daughter had a pregnancy test. The mother said, "If she is pregnant, she is going to have an abortion." However, my girlfriend never told her mother she was pregnant - at least that I know of. I passed the decision off to my girlfriend, and her friend gave her the money for the abortion. To this day, I still feel regret - tremendous, unrelenting regret. What if I had been man enough to take responsibility? I have had six children of my own. Every time I think of that girlfriend, I think of the other child I have in heaven.2

I recently began to seek out people who were willing to share their pro-life stories with this ministry, and the world, to encourage others to choose life via my Facebook page.  I made up flyers to pass out to local churches, and even posted an ad on a local Craigslist community page.  Within, I think, 20 minutes, I had a brief conversation with a man I’ll call “Paul.”

Paul is a staunch pro-lifer, and in fact had arranged a large pro-life rally at a federal building in California more than 25 years ago called “Walk for Life.”  President Reagan was among the many celebrities in attendance.

Last September, at the age of 60 (!) Paul found out that his girlfriend was pregnant.  He never thought it could happen, and he (they?) did not want children.  He says, “…what could I do? There was never a question that I had to see this through. She doesn't believe in abortion either.”  They are now engaged to be married and little Silas was born last Wednesday.

Paul doesn’t think that his story has much interest, but I beg to differ.  At an age when most men are empty nesters, preparing for retirement and waiting for the grandkids to stop in for a day-trip, he is just starting out- gleefully- with the all-night diaper and feeding-frenzy, and has 18 more years to look forward to the love and care of his beautiful new son.  In his own words, “He's the most beautiful little boy, in my eyes, that was ever born.”  He is a rare gem.  His fiancée is a very blessed young woman.
Another inspiring story of an unborn child’s father stepping up to the plate:

“I was 18, just graduated from high school and planning on going to a top Christian college in the fall when I found out I was pregnant. I had big plans and I was going to make them happen. I didn't want my parents or friends to think badly of me. So, I was dead set on abortion. My boyfriend was shocked that I was pregnant, but even more shocked that I had decided on abortion because I had always been a "pro-life" Christian (and a pastor's kid). I hesitate to call myself truly pro-life at that point in my life because it was more of a political belief than a true conviction of how awful abortion really is.

“My boyfriend begged me not to have an abortion. I ended up going to a crisis pregnancy center to humor him. I expected them to be judgmental and condescending, however, there I was treated with more compassion than I had ever imagined. They didn't treat me like I was just a host body to the fetus they were trying to save. One of the nurses said something to me that almost made me change my mind. She said that another girl who had chosen to have her baby said this: "I thought about when I'm 80 and what decision I would be proud of when I look back at my life." Like I said, it *almost* got me to change my mind, but it didn't. I made an appointment at the abortion clinic. I wanted to get in the next day so that I could use my full-time summer job as a cover story for my being gone all day (the abortion clinic was in a town 100 miles from my home town). However, because of a mandatory wait law my state has, I wasn't able to get in until the next week.

“I'm telling you all of this so you can see what led to me ultimately not having an abortion. That week gave my boyfriend the time and the courage to go behind my back and tell my dad what was happening. That led to an outpouring of love, support and forgiveness from my family. Because of that, I now have a beautiful almost 2-year-old. I married my boyfriend, not out of obligation, but out of love. I came to love him even more after seeing his courage and strength to stand up to me and save not only our daughter, but myself as well. I'm now a junior in college, graduating on time and I have a life full of love. Seeing how God watched over me and intervened to prevent me from a life of regret and hurt when I was so willing to seek sin to cover sin has renewed my relationship with Him. That relationship is now the foundation of my marriage and my parenthood. God is so merciful. My life is more complete now than it ever has been…”3

I know that it is Mother’s Day this weekend, but should it not be every day that our mothers are respected, honored, even revered for the sacrifices that were made on our behalf?  Because of our mothers’ decisions to choose LIFE- whether they were married, divorced, widowed, or single, whether rich or poor, ready or not- are we all here fighting for the next generation.  In addition, in a marriage-relationship built around God’s patience, grace, mercy, and love, husband-wife (father-mother) have been inexplicably intertwined and have become “one flesh.”  It takes two, so to speak, to create a family, so ideally, both Mom and Dad need our support and encouragement in the rearing up of Godly children who will be willing to defend the Kingdom.

To the fathers who stuck around, who allowed moms to take on their God-ordained role without having to function also as “dad”: THANK YOU!  And to the mothers, whether you were forced or chose to tackle parenthood alone: we salute you and surely God has blessed YOU for choosing LIFE, and for your hard work and dedication in taking on multiple roles to keep your family strong and healthy.  I can only hope someday that I will have the patience and tenacity you’ve displayed to take on the role of “Supermom.”
