Liberals Support Sex-Selective Abortion (They Just Don’t Want to Admit It)

By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS

Last night, Jake Tapper of ABC News contacted White House Press Secretary Jay Carney for a statement on the current administration’s position regarding H.R. 3541, otherwise known as PRENDA (the Prenatal Non-Discrimination Act of 2012.)

Carney could not immediately provide a statement; however, deputy press secretary Jamie Smith responded in a later statement:

“The Administration opposes gender discrimination in all forms, but the end result of this legislation would be to subject doctors to criminal prosecution if they fail to determine the motivations behind a very personal and private decision. The government should not intrude in medical decisions or private family matters in this way.”1

What the administration fails to note- within Section 5 of the bill2:

RULE OF CONSTRUCTION- Nothing in this Act shall be construed to require that a healthcare provider has an affirmative duty to inquire as to the motivation for the abortion, absent the healthcare provider having knowledge or information that the abortion is being sought based on the sex or gender of the child.

Well, either way, the Obama administration is going to be a little ticked with the passage of this bill last night through the House Judiciary Committee by a vote of 20-133.  According to a press release issued by Arizona Congressman Trent Franks:

"The very bedrock foundational principle that gave birth to America was the conviction that all human beings are children of God and created equal in His sight. In 1847, Frederick Douglass said, 'Right is of no sex; truth is of no color, God is the Father of us all--and all are brethren.'

"I know when the subject is related in any way to abortion, the doors of reason and human compassion in our minds and hearts often close, and the humanity of the unborn can sometimes no longer be seen. But this is an issue upon which all Americans should be able to find agreement, regardless of our party affiliations or even our beliefs about abortion.

"Our innate sense of human fairness should make it abundantly clear that aborting a little baby because he or she happens to be black or because he or she has been arbitrarily deemed 'lesser' is fundamentally wrong, representing a betrayal of the precious truth that all men are created equal and are stamped with the Imago Dei on their souls.

"I am convinced this is the civil rights battle that will define our generation, and, by the grace of God, I look forward to this vital measure's consideration on the House floor and its ultimate passage."

The legislation outlaws abortions performed on the basis of the child's sex or race. It also outlaws the coercion of any woman to obtain either a sex- or race-based abortion.  A minority baby is currently five times more likely to be aborted than a white baby, and nearly half of all black babies' are aborted, with over 70 percent of abortion clinics being located in predominantly minority neighborhoods.4

Opponents, prior to the passage of the bill, were unamused by the attempt of pro-life supporters to bring PRENDA to the table.

“Somebody decided politically that it was a difficult place to put people in,” House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., told reporters Wednesday afternoon. “It’s a political effort, not a substantive effort.”5

The lunacy of the left overwhelms me.

“The Republican majority continues its War on Women in a new and creative way: by attempting to couch legislation that would destroy women’s fundamental constitutional rights as a woman’s rights law. It is cynical, but creative,” Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., said. “The preference for male children is a real, if limited, phenomenon in the United States. Some women face familial and community preference to have male children, and that pressure can increase with each subsequent birth. But this does nothing to help those women.”6

Blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng, who spoke out against forced abortions in his native China, captured international headlines this month and GOP aides said the leadership hoped to capitalize on the momentum of that awareness to ensure that sex-selection abortions are not legal in the U.S.7

“For most of us, Mr. Speaker, ‘It’s a girl’ is cause for enormous joy, happiness and celebration,” Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., said on the House floor. “But in many countries including our own, it could be a death sentence. Today the three-most dangerous words in China and India are, ‘It’s a girl.’ We can’t let that happen here.”8

As I’ve written previously9, this IS a concern here.  With the release of an undercover video by Live Action10, it is clear that organizations such as Planned Parenthood are at least prepared for women and their partners to ask about such things; we can see that the “workers of iniquity” employed there have no qualms about helping someone obtain a late-term abortion, as most ultrasounds cannot detect the sex of the baby until approximately four or five months into the pregnancy.

Psalm 106:35-40 (KJV)
But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works.
And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them.
Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils,
And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood.
Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.
Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance.

Proverbs 6:16-17 (KJV)
These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood…

Gendercide Comes to America?!

By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS

The dirty little secret of sex-selective abortion within the United States is exposed in a shocking new undercover video released today by Live Action.

Live Action is a youth led movement dedicated to building a culture of life and ending the human rights abuse of abortion. They use new media to educate the public about the humanity of the unborn and investigative journalism to expose threats against the vulnerable and defenseless.1 The video is first in a new series titled "Gendercide: Sex-Selection in America," exposing the practice of sex-selective abortion in the United States and how Planned Parenthood and the rest of the abortion industry facilitate the selective elimination of baby girls in the womb.2

In the video, taken on April 10, 2012, an undercover member of Live Action went into the Planned Parenthood in South Austin (TX) and proceeded to engage a “counselor” in a conversation regarding the best way to determine the sex of the baby she was carrying so that she may terminate if it was a girl.  They discussed how sex is usually determined by ultrasound at about five months gestation, how the brain was already developed at that point, which physicians would be least likely to object if they knew she may obtain an abortion based on the sex of the baby, and even how to scam the Medicaid system to pay for her ultrasound, even though she planned to use the knowledge for an abortion.

"The search-and-destroy targeting of baby girls through prenatal testing and abortion is a pandemic that is spreading across the globe," notes Lila Rose, founder and president of Live Action. "Research proves that sex-selective abortion has now come to America. The abortion industry, led by Planned Parenthood, is a willing participant."3

"Planned Parenthood and their ruthless abortion-first mentality is the real 'war on women'," says Rose. "Sex-selective abortion is gender discrimination with lethal consequences for little girls."4

On Wednesday, Congress will debate the Prenatal Non-Discrimination Act (PRENDA), which would ban sex-selective abortions nationally.

A Miraculous Survival in a World Gone Wrong

By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS

This world is getting crazier and crazier.

There have been several stories in the media over the last few years about pregnant women, whether innocently going about their business or being somewhere she likely shouldn’t have been, being unfortunate enough to run into someone who doesn’t quite have their head screwed on straight.  These poor women, whether being naïve in their choice of friends or wrongly trusting a stranger who seemed to have their best interests, end up at the receiving end of a brutal attack that puts them in danger of the loss of life and limb, and often the innocent inside them.  Sometimes it is by the very person who is supposed to help protect that innocent.

That’s why today’s news headline, “Pregnant Woman, Unborn Baby Survive Being Abducted, Set on Fire, Shot,”1, 2 is by turns shocking but comforting, discouraging yet hopeful.

The young mother-to-be from Warren, Michigan, after what could only be described as a “date” with her ex-boyfriend (and father of her baby,) dropped the man (if that is what you would want to continue calling him) off at his new girlfriend’s house.  Once inside the garage, she was grabbed by the throat, a gun to her head, and forced to the ground.  Her mouth, hands, and feet were duct-taped and she was blindfolded.  Thrown back into the car and driven to an alley in Detroit, she was told that ‘she knows why’ this was being done to her and asked how far along she was before being set on fire; after managing to put the fire out herself by rolling on the ground, the male assailant shot her in the back.  He took off on foot as the nine-month-pregnant woman played dead.  She got up and drove herself to her mother’s house in Detroit, where she was then taken to a hospital.

That both mother and baby are healthy and expected to survive is nothing short of a miracle.

It does, however, bring up an interesting point about how the liberal-biased media is unable to decide, like their Messiah King Obama, whether or not the unborn are babies with a right to life or a parasite that can be killed up to the moment of birth (see previous post, Obama a Hypocrite on Abortion... Oh, the Irony.)

Commenter “A.D. Roach” seems to have summed it up best:

“So glad to hear of her miraculous escape, and that she and the BABY are going to be ok! However, I thought what she has in her womb is merely a fetal non-person, not a “baby.” It is definitely disingenuous for so many in the news and entertainment media to keep rejoicing over “baby bumps” and the survival of an “unborn baby” while at the same time proclaiming women’s rights to unlimited abortions. So, was this an “unborn baby” who “survived,” or was it a non-personal pre-born fetus without any legitimate expectancy or right to life? Had the “unborn baby” died but the mother did not, would the kidnapper be guilty of murder, or would he only be guilty of performing an abortion without a license? Since apparently the objective of the kidnapping was to prevent another “inconvenient” birth was he not attempting to save the woman and society from having to raise another “unwanted child?…”3

I think that in any case, this woman should be thankful the Lord was watching out for her and her child, and that maybe she should take it not only as a sign of that, but perhaps also a warning that she should be a little more selective regarding a future husband- someone who will be more likely to live his life justified and sanctified.

Using Regret to Warn Against Unrighteousness

By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS

Gwen and Brad were college athletes, Christians, and were outwardly living their lives righteously.  What their friends and families did not realize was that they not only were sexually active, but they became pregnant and subsequently had an abortion.  Later, they married and had children, but for 15 years they never were quite able to get rid of the guilt- that is, until, Gwen heard someone speak at a women’s meeting about their abortion and the healing process.

“And I sat in the back of the room saying, I can’t believe she’s doing this, that’s so hard, but I saw what God was doing, it was obvious, He was moving, His spirit was moving in the room, and women were, were coming to healing, and, and embracing His grace and forgiveness, and a lot of times we won’t forgive ourselves, but I saw the hand of God move, because she was willing to tell.”

They decided to tell Gwen’s parents and, while shocked, they forgave them.  Now Gwen speaks at conferences and retreats to help women heal from mistakes of the past.

“…It was the deepest regret of my life.  It will always be the deepest regret of my life,” she said.  “Jesus died for every single sin… there are no sins that fall outside the scope of God’s ability to forgive.  And when we understand that, and we understand that when we confess our sin, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sin, and to cleanse us for all of the unrighteousness as the Bible says, that’s when healing begins.”

Another Inspirational Story of Life

By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS

Today I logged into my Facebook account, and in my newsfeed, I saw an article posted by Prophecy News Watch (with a link to the original story on The Christian Post) about a young mother who decided that there was just no way she would abort her baby, even though she and her husband KNEW there was something seriously wrong- they just didn’t know what.

The mother, Lacey Buchanan, posted her testimonial on YouTube and GodVine and it has already garnered almost ten million hits.

Her son, Christian, who was born on February 18, 2011, was one of only 50 people in the world with a bilateral cleft palate and lip.  He also had clefted eyes, so that he was almost completely blind.

People were cruel to Lacey, whispering behind her back, and asking what was wrong with “that baby.”  One girl even chastised her for not aborting him.  But things began to turn around when people started to recognize her and Christian, and they would tell her how he inspired them:  “What a special child doing big things for God at such an early age. What special parents, to realize God works all things for good for those who love Him. Christian's story touched my heart -- I will pray for your precious miracle. The smile on his face makes me smile :)” says Heather (not me) in a comment on Buchanan's blog.

Winning the War for Babies

By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS

A Gallup Poll published yesterday1 has renewed hope that people are indeed listening to the pro-life message and are waking up to the fact that babies in utero are, in fact, living human beings and not just a “soulless clump of cells.”  The decline in pro-choice views is seen across the major partisan groups, with an overall decline in the last year from 49 to 41%, and a jump from 45 to 50% identifying as pro-life.

Since last May, Republicans have gained four percentage points among pro-lifers, from 68% to 72%, where pro-choicers have lost 6% (28 to 22 %.)  Among Democrats, pro-life proponents increased from 27 to 34%, and pro-choicers dropped from 68 to 58% in the same period.  Also, Independents who self-identify as pro-life increased from 41 to 47%, and pro-choice supporters dropped from 51 to 41%.  Overall, Americans’ fundamental views on the morality and legality of abortion have held relatively steady, per the corresponding graph.

Personally, I think that last point made by the Gallup organization is misleading.  How can such a large percentage of Americans change their views on whether they are pro-life or pro-choice, yet have no change in their views of the morality of abortion (legality aside)?

Just over half of all respondents answered that abortion should be legal in certain circumstances, holding relatively steady for the last twelve years.  A quarter believe it should be legal in all circumstances, and 20% believe it should be illegal in all cases.

One can only speculate as to exactly why there is such a change of heart in America… could it be the distribution and viewing of media such as the “180” movie2, or the Abort73 website3?  Is it the recent congressional wrangling over federal funding for Planned Parenthood and investigation of their practices?  Is the conflict between the Roman Catholic Church and the Obama Administration4 that has captured their attention and caused them to question their own views and values?  Or perhaps the Lord has tugged at the hearts and minds of the people and convicted them:  we can only hope and pray that this is the case.  Regardless, it is encouraging to see that so many people are finally realizing that using sin to cover sin is never the answer.

Has Michael J. Fox Seen the Light of Day?

By Heather Mathews for PPSIMMONS                                                                                  May 23, 2012

I never purported to be an expert in the various scientific disciplines, but my interest, nonetheless, was a major motivation to get my practical nursing license a few years ago and at least get part-way through my RN degree.  At one point, I was hoping to use it as a stepping stone to eventually end up in medical research.  Alas, plans change.

Despite the change in plans, I still retain at least a nominal interest, particularly where science and God’s plan intersect.  Coupled with my occasional dabbling in the “news” that is Hollyweird, it’s no wonder I was at least a little surprised and a bit vindicated when I saw that actor Michael J. Fox, famous for “Family Ties” and the “Back to the Future” trilogy, now believes the controversial therapy may not ultimately yield a cure for his disease, he told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in an exclusive interview.2

There have been “problems along the way,” Fox said of stem cell studies, for which he has long advocated.   Instead, he said, new drug therapies are showing real promise and are “closer today” to providing a cure for Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative illness that over time causes the body to become rigid and the brain to shut down.3

“Stem cells are an avenue of research that we’ve pursued and continue to pursue but it’s part of a broad portfolio of things that we look at. There have been some issues with stem cells, some problems along the way… It’s not so much that [stem cell research has] diminished in its prospects for breakthroughs as much as it’s the other avenues of research have grown and multiplied and become as much or more promising. So, an answer may come from stem cell research but it’s more than likely to come from another area.”4

I feel for Fox.  While I have been blessed to not have been diagnosed with anything near as devastating as he was back in 1991, I do have a very large extended family, many of whom have Huntington’s disease, another terrible neurodegenerative disorder, and I have seen the effect it has on the family.

How do you, however, justify causing death to save a life?  There is no guarantee that experimenting with the death of the pre-born is going to save a life or cure all cases of a particular disease, but could it theoretically cause some kind of mutation by the combination of non-native DNA in a synthetic manner?  This could even be the case with the usage of adult stem cells (which the article fails to differentiate:) we just don’t know the long-term effects of the usage of allogeneic treatments.  But then again, we DO have the simple medical miracle of blood transfusion.  It just reminds me of experimental chimerism (like I said, I’m NOT a scientist.)  I am heartened by Fox’s recognition that stem cells are not likely to be the holy grail of disease management, and that drug therapies, experimental surgeries, and earlier diagnosis are more probable methods in someday eradicating this disease (prior to the days of Revelation 21:4, anyway.)  Now if only we could convince him that embryonic stem-cell experimentation is not an answer at all.
